About

Using a range of natural fibers, learn to prepare and spin yawn specific to your needs, whether knitting, crocheting, weaving or some other purpose. Learn techniques for preparing sheep's wool, alpaca, silk, cotton and linen. Blend fibers and colors with English combs, hand carders an/or a drum carder. Learn the difference between worsted and woolen spun yarns. Experiment with drop spindles and support spindles; learn to spin and ply with a treadle wheel and other various styles of wheels that will be available. This is a great class for people considering making their own yarns, those who are just starting out spinning, or those who want to move beyond commercially prepared wool rovings. Beginner

Kate Mitchell is Executive Director at Mid-Hudson Heritage Center in Poughkeepsie NY. She has a degree in textile and surface design from FIT and has worked in Peru in capacity building and skill development with six women's textile cooperatives (weaving, spinning and dyeing) in the rural Andes Mountains creating fair trade sustainable textiles for the international market. Before that, she taught spinning in the Hudson Valley where she owened a yarn shop and studio.
