Poetry in Cloth: Stitching from the Heart with Missy Stevens

Back to Previous
- +

Create imagery out of fabrics, threads, and other textile materials - something that has personal meaning to you. In the making you may learn even more! These images might be representational or abstract, joyful or full of sadness, folkloric or fantastic. We can use materials that already have a history with you that may be softened by use. We will sketch and compose using fabrics and thread while learning different techniques such as applique, embroidery, couching, and wire wrapping to create the effects you desire. We will also explore doorways to your imagination and Missy will share some stretches to keep your body happy as you stitch. Beginner and Beyond

Missy Stevens has been making heartfelt images using fabric and thread since 1990, but has been in love with fabric since she was a child. For many years she worked exclusively with the punch needle. Her thread paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States, including the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut; the St. Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri; and the Society for Contemporary Crafts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition, her work is in public collections, including those of the Museum of Art & Design, New York, New York and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. More recently she has been exploring ways to create visual images using cloth, thread and other materials. Out of this work has emerged an approach she calls poetry in cloth. Missy is a New Jersey native and a New Englander at heart. She received a BAA from the Program in Artisanry at Boston University. She lives and works in Washington, Connecticut. www.missystevens.com
